January 13th I had full replacement of my left knee. A success. Rehab started the next day and everything went down hill, four blood clots and a mini-stroke. Got out of hospital five days before ice storm hit. Without power for eight days. Wood for our Buck stove ran out after four days. Got down to 43 degrees--BRRR. That was followed by a wind storm and our neighborhood looked like a lumber yard. We were better off than many in our area as some went a full month without power. There were over 2,000 utility poles broken down in this area.
With clean up going well in this area, it is beginning to get back to normal. We have many daffodils in bloom and one neighbor has a beautiful tulip tree in full bloom. Robins, sparrows, wrens, bluejays, cardinals and one dove have made there presence known in our yard. Squirrels and rabbits have been spotted in the neighborhood. One neighbor stated that he had a beaver in his back yard next to a stream that borders his yard.
Western Kentucky is in the NCAA after winning the Sunbelt Tournament and U of L appears to have made it as well. We will have to see what kind of draws they get in the pairings. Does anyone have other teams that we should watch for in the big dance?

Gosh, David, you did have a round of it. I had remembered your surgery and assumed rehab was just taking a while. Hope you're back to one hundred percent now.
We too suffered from the ice storm but no where near what you all did. Was a nightmare.
I too am glad Western is going to the "big dance". I tend to only pay attention when a team I'm interested in is playing, so now I'll pull the sheet from Monday's paper and follow along.
David, I'm glad your knee is better, that you survived the blood clots, and that you're back to electric powered mode. I guess that counts as a pretty tough January! Maybe the spring flowers and birds and beaver are nature's way of putting a softer edge on things. I'm glad to hear that Western and UofL are in the big dance. Haven't followed college basketball in years (and I used to be a rabid Western and Kentucky and Ohio State fan!), so don't have a team to contribute. Guess I had better start reading the sports section! Keep us posted with some scores...
David, I am so sorry to hear about your stretch of really bad road - you have had your share for this year so hopefully the rest of the year will be nothing but good.
We don't have any beavers here in downtown Rocky Mount but we do have more wildlife than I would have imagined possible. And most of it winds up in my yard because it is overgrown and I feed all comers.
David, I am so glad to hear you survived the physical ordeal and the ice storm and other events of nature, too. I, too, am a big basketball fan. I cheer for Wake Forest here in the ACC. They embarassed themselves by coming in with one and done. Of course, I follow UK who hasn't showed up often this year. Carolina and Duke are big players around here in NC, but I am not really either a big Carolina or Duke fan. My daughter and son in law went to NC State but they are out, too. I was thrilled with Western last year and wish them success. Both my parents graduated from Western so I went to many Western events and can even sing, "College Heights on hilltop fair..."

When I pulled the bracket out of the paper this morning, my first thought was that it's a shame Western is not playing in Greensboro. Ann could go and lead the singing!
I am checking out this space. I just wrote a long piece that was lost because it said I didn't have an account. WRONG! I am trying again.

What I had written was that Greensboro, NC, is a tournament site where Duke and/or Carolina, I believe is playing. I know it is Duke. I know that Western fans would have been thrilled to hear my rendition of College Heights...if I could have afforded the nearly $200 to buy a packet of tickets to see the Hilltoppers play. Do you all remember the 8th grade girls' basketball game where Nancy Gibbs or Brenda Wallace or both bit other players? I, myself, was not bitten but I barely escaped bared fangs and got out of there as fast as I could. I love basketball but couldn't dribble a ball or make a basket if my life depended on it. I do, however, enjoy this March Madness and have loved basketball since I was a baby living next door to the old Olmstead school where Daddy was once principal. Mama used to tell that I would wake up from my naps in time to go to basketball practice. Some things we never get over, do we?

Ann - Now that you mention that basketball game, it seems I may have some vague memory. But are you sure it was 8th grade? It seems I'm remembering something in the gym before the remodeling. And who in the world would have ever picked either one of us to be on any sports team?
